Must-See Churches in Cartagena’s
Historic Center

The historic center of Cartagena, known as the Walled City, is home to several churches of great historical, architectural, and cultural value. Here is a list of must-see churches:

Cathedral of Santa Catalina de Alejandría

The Cathedral of Santa Catalina de Alejandría, also known as the Metropolitan Basilica Cathedral of Cartagena, is considered one of the oldest cathedrals in the Americas. Built in the 16th century, it stands as one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and a symbol of its rich colonial history. Located in Plaza de la Proclamación, just a 4-minute walk from Casa Noa, the cathedral is surrounded by important historical buildings such as the Palace of the Inquisition, the Palace of the Proclamation, the Bank of the Republic, the Gold Museum, and Simón Bolívar Park. The cathedral is open to the public and is one of Cartagena’s top tourist attractions.

Church of San Pedro Claver

The Church of San Pedro Claver is one of the most iconic temples in Cartagena, known for its architectural beauty and profound historical and spiritual significance. Its importance is closely tied to the life and work of Saint Peter Claver, known as the “Apostle of the Slaves,” whose remains rest within this sanctuary. This church is located in San Pedro Claver Square, just a 7-minute walk from Casa Noa, and is surrounded by a charming atmosphere, with nearby restaurants, terraces, and views of the Naval Museum. The Church of San Pedro Claver is not only a place to admire its architecture but also a space for reflecting on the history of Cartagena and the humanitarian legacy of this Jesuit saint.

Church of Santo Domingo

The Church of Santo Domingo is the oldest church in Cartagena, built in the 16th century. It is located in Santo Domingo Square and is surrounded by restaurants, cafés, shops, and the famous sculpture La Gorda Gertrudis, better known as La Gorda de Botero, by the renowned artist Fernando Botero. This church is well known for its “twisted bell tower,” which, according to legend, was the work of the devil in an attempt to destroy the church. From a technical perspective, experts believe the leaning foundations are the result of construction issues at the time — but this has only added charm to its story.

Church of Santa Toribio

The Church of Santa Toribio is an architectural and historical gem within Cartagena’s Walled City. Located in Plaza Fernández de Madrid, it is surrounded by picturesque streets, charming restaurants, and colonial buildings. Santa Toribio was the last church built within the Walled City, dating back to the 17th century. Its main altar is carved from wood and features beautiful colonial details. The Church of Santa Toribio de Mogrovejo is a special corner of the Walled City that blends history, spirituality, and architectural beauty — an ideal place to admire Cartagena’s cultural heritage.
